Not recession-proof any more

大学教授一直被认为是一个安全职业,不受经济危机的影响。没想到也没能在这次危机中幸免于难。最近和几个朋友吃饭时,听说好几个学校对faculty已经进行了pay cut,或者正在考虑pay cut。特别是公立学校,由于不少州政府出现赤字问题,好像情况更严重。象加州的大学系统,亚利桑那大学系统,夏威夷大学等。不过这些pay cut都被冠以一个不同的名字:furlough。下面是Wikipedia对furlough的解释(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furlough):
 

“A furlough (pronounced /ˈfɜrloʊ/; from Dutch: "verlof") is a temporary leave of absence from employment, duty in the armed services, or from a prison term. It may be voluntary or involuntary.

…"

理论上讲,furlough相当于不带薪的休假。本意是员工减少工作时间和effort,雇主同等地减少支付工资来节约成本。但学校禁止老师在上课时间TAKE A FURLOUGH。除了上课外,vacation days对faculty而言毫无意义。不能减少teaching的时间和effort,总不能减少research时间罢。特别是对于还没混上tenure的,倒找钱让他去减少research time估计都不干。paycut就paycut呗,遮遮掩掩干啥。至少也让广大faculty同志的人生完整了一把。
