Mankiw’s Blog mentioned three great articles about the US health care reform: http://gregmankiw.blogspot.com/2009/08/three-on-health-policy.html. Among them, Cochrane’s article made the best point in my opinion. I also agree that there are some problems with the current system. However, by no means do I believe that the government can do better than the private sector to correct these problems. Some of these problems are actually caused by the government as John and the other two authors correctly pointed out.
It seems to me that the Obama-care totally missed the big picture: what is the purpose of the reform, cutting costs to put the government deficit under control or extending coverage to currently uninsured people? President Obama claims that his plan will do both. To me, it is a fairy tale too good to be true from the beginning. The report from the Congressional Budget Office confirms what I have thought. Sorry, no free lunch. Straight and simple.
